My intention with this series was to explore the transformative potential of two elemental images – a grid of lines and a pattern of dots – investigating how they could evolve and merge into a variety of captivating still compositions. Drawing inspiration from Steve Reich’s innovative use of shifting sound patterns, where repetition and subtle changes create a sense of evolving complexity, I sought to capture a similar sense of fluidity and transition in a visual form. By introducing slight camera movements during each shot, I documented the dynamic interplay between the lines and dots, resulting in a series of images that reveal a compelling blend of the two original patterns, with textures ranging from wavy, interconnected lines to intricate, dot-like structures, each frame offering a unique snapshot of this visual metamorphosis.

To achieve this, I photographed a slideshow that alternates between the two images, allowing the frequency of the slideshow, the camera’s shutter speed, and the deliberate movement of the camera during exposure to shape the final outcome. This experimental process enabled me to explore the boundaries of photographic capture, revealing how motion and timing can transform simple patterns into complex, evolving forms that invite viewers to witness the beauty of transition and change.
