11 Contemporary Artists working in Abstract Photography
extract Artsy aticle by Elyssa Goodman | august 23, 2023
Dutch photographic artist Luuk de Haan has been creating one-of-a-kind work—quite literally, as there is only one of each of his prints—that lives at the intersection of geometry and fantasy. As writer Derek Horton wrote, de Haan’s images “are documents of their own coming into being rather than the recording of a world outside the photograph.”
Each of de Haan’s images revisits analog photography’s alternative processes alongside digital manipulation, at once a use of hardware and software: He photographs a digital structure he creates on the screen with analog cameras. A composer as well as an artist, de Haan is influenced by the likes of Ellsworth Kelly, yes, but also Steve Reich, always cultivating both the spirit and presence of minimalism. The resultant work is both vibrant and sleek, mysterious and intricate, “somewhere between present and vanishing,” as writer Vince Aletti once wrote in The New Yorker.

Grenzeloos Tekenen
September 1 – 23, 2018
Schlessart | Voert 18A | 1861 PE Bergen (NL)
This group show intends to make visible the contemporary art of drawing and the diversity that is currently going on in this area. Dutch drawing has a rich history, which, in addition to other art forms, has now achieved a worthy position. What is striking is that for decades the visual language of artists who work on paper seems to be inexhaustible. Public and museum interest in contemporary drawing has grown enormously in recent years.

Contemporary Transformations
April 26 – June 11, 2018
Duke Contemporary Art Space
999 Gaysorn Village, 1 st Fl., Phloen Chit Rd., Lumphini, Pathumwan, Bangkok (TH)
Curated by Manfredi Style — the Italian Art & Design multidisciplinary initiative based in Florence and Singapore—which explores the changes of our society through Art. Human Figures, Landscapes and Cultural Artifacts transform, evolve, turn into new shapes, while South-Asia embraces this transformation at an astonishingly swift pace.
On occasion of this show, Manfredi Style will showcase the large human-sized sculptures by Dario Tironi (Italy), crafted with an ensemble of found objects and resins; the portrait sculptures made of recycled wood by Strook (Belgium); the paintings of street artist Laurent Peybernes (France), presenting for the occasion a special artwork combined with augmented reality technology; the abstract photographs of Luuk de Haan (Nethelands) and the altered landscapes photographs of Paolo Giordano (Italy) as well as the Super Hero-themed prints, intertwining with political figures, by Alessandro Rabatti (Italy). Manfredi Style will be unveiling other artworks for this exhibition.

Volar by Longplay and nine rare poems by Joost Zwagerman
release date: 18 February 2018
On November 23, 1999, the formation Longplay met at the Prado Studio in Amsterdam to dedicate themselves – for an unlimited period of time – to a number of their compositions. Dutch poet Joost Zwagerman heard the demo and wrote nine poems related to the compositions. The nine poems by Zwagerman with the composition of the same name Volar were published in 2000 in the Rotterdam cult magazine Green Groceries. The album Volar then fell into the background due to other artistic activities.
Now after 18 years, the poems and Volar have been realized as a bibliophile limited edition of 100 copies. This special edition, including a silkscreen (76 x 51.5 cm, folded to 19 x 13 cm) by Longplay.

“The show borrows its title from a series by Luuk de Haan, ghostly black-and-white pictures of biomorphic white forms, which, like most images here, hover somewhere between present and vanishing.”

Everything is Theirs

Bergen | Geestgrond in Museum Kranenburg
Self-portrait in which I question my own originality. By letting spoken words from films or interviews – of artists I appreciate – ‘speak’ through myself. Supported by an improvised piano piece I did in my teens.
